Walkthrough The Traditional Megalochori Village having a stop at a traditional Kafenio
This authentic village is truly a hidden gem of Santorini.
Imagine being able to see the traditional vineyards, the lava-stoned streets, the renovated and abandoned houses after the earthquake of 1956, the colorful and unique house doors, the traditional cave houses, and the authentic kafenio or restaurants nearby the main street of the village or its square.
Megalochori village itself has a nice mixture of cream and white Cycladic houses with contrasting colorful doors and a fair few white churches with bright blue domes.
Walkthrough The Traditional Pyrgos Kallistis Village
Pyrgos is a typical example of medieval architecture with narrow, labyrinthine streets, fortified walls and hidden passages.
The streets are narrow, and there is also a maze of walls and secret passageways that hail from its Medieval history.
It is built amphitheatrically on a hill, at the island’s highest point, offering magnificent views of Santorini in almost all directions
On top of this hill remain the ruins of a Venetian castle (Kasteli) that was once the island's administrative center.
Walkthrough The Traditional Picturesque Vothonas Village
Vothonas village is built on a picturesque ravine with traditional houses which are literally carved out of rocks.
Vothonas is built in a steep gorge and it catches the eye for its unique, special architecture. The majority of the dwellings are cave houses the villagers built by carving the volcanic rocks. Using a smear made from volcanic soil they constructed roofs that stand by themselves with no support.
The amazing people of Santorini made their houses on the ravine walls. It is an opportunity to admire the practicality of the locals who were sheltered in the ‘yposkafa’ (dwellings carved in the rock).
Along with the natural beauty, they form a picturesque settlement you can enjoy by wandering through the charming, narrow alleys.
